Course Overview: This training program is designed to equip construction industry supervisors with the necessary knowledge and skills to fulfill the role of a Competent Person as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of their responsibilities in ensuring a safe and compliant work environment. The syllabus covers essential topics such as hazard identification, inspection techniques, employee training, and recordkeeping.

Course Duration: 2 days

Day 1:

Session 1: Introduction to Competent Person Role

  • Overview of OSHA's definition of a Competent Person
  • Understanding the responsibilities and duties of a Competent Person
  • Importance of the Competent Person in maintaining a safe work environment

Session 2: Hazard Identification and Assessment

  • Identifying common construction hazards and their associated risks
  • Conducting thorough hazard assessments
  • Strategies for controlling and mitigating hazards

Session 3: Fall Protection

  • Understanding fall hazards and fall protection systems
  • Reviewing OSHA regulations related to fall protection
  • Inspection and maintenance of fall protection equipment

Session 4: Excavation and Trenching Safety

  • Recognizing the hazards associated with excavations and trenches
  • Understanding OSHA standards for excavation and trenching
  • Conducting soil classification and protective system evaluations

Day 2:

Session 5: Scaffolding Safety

  • Identifying common scaffolding hazards
  • Understanding OSHA standards for scaffold construction and use
  • Inspection and maintenance of scaffolding systems

Session 6: Electrical Safety

  • Identifying electrical hazards in construction
  • Understanding OSHA regulations for electrical safety
  • Safe work practices for electrical equipment and wiring

Session 7: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Recognizing the need for PPE in construction
  • Selecting and providing appropriate PPE for workers
  • Training employees on proper use and maintenance of PPE

Session 8: Inspections, Training, and Recordkeeping

  • Developing effective inspection strategies
  • Conducting regular inspections to identify hazards
  • Implementing comprehensive employee training programs
  • Maintaining accurate and organized records

Final Assessment: Participants will undergo a comprehensive assessment to evaluate their understanding of the key concepts covered throughout the training program. This assessment will consist of both written and practical components.

Course Conclusion: Upon successful completion of this training program, participants will have the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill the role of a Competent Person in the construction industry.
